School of Science
The School of Science at Marist has competitive funding available to support science majors in any discipline who are committed to pursuing a research project under the supervision of a Marist faculty member. The purpose of the funding is to provide real research experiences for students who have a genuine desire and ability to pursue scientific research. Interested students should initially make contact with a faculty member who is willing to donate his or her time to act as a research mentor. The student should then discuss a suitable project to pursue.
The funding will cover a stipend and limited expenses for supplies. Preference will be given to students with a strong academic record and a commitment to scientific research.
Through The Dr. J. Richard LaPietra Sponsored Student Research Fund to Enhance Excellence in Chemistry Studies, the School of Science will annually support up to two chemistry or biochemistry students committed to pursuing a summer research project under the supervision of a Marist faculty member. This opportunity is made possible through the generosity of Mrs. Barbara LaPietra, who wished to honor her husband's 41 years of service as a chemistry professor and inspirational mentor and advisor to thousands of students at Marist.
The purpose of the funding is to provide real research experiences for Marist chemistry or biochemistry students who have a genuine desire and ability to pursue scientific research. Interested students should initially make contact with a faculty member from the Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Physics who is willing to donate his or her time to advise the student over the summer. The student should then discuss a suitable project to pursue over this time.
This eight-week program commences in early June and culminate in a formal presentation and report. Students are expected to treat the project as a full-time job over this period. The LaPietra Fund awards $400 per week to each student in addition to covering on-campus housing, and providing limited funds for supplies and/or project-related travel. Preference will be given to students with a strong academic record and a commitment to scientific research.
