Jackie Piddock '26 is more than a biology major and basketball player鈥攕he鈥檚 a leader, an aspiring Marine Corps officer, a curious scholar, and a reflective community member.
"At Marist, I don鈥檛 have to limit myself to a single identity. I鈥檓 not just a student, or an athlete, or a biology major; I鈥檓 all of those things and more," Jackie said.
Jackie鈥檚 journey to Marist began with basketball recruitment, but what drew her in was the warmth and family atmosphere she felt from everyone on campus.
As a human biology major and psychology minor, Jackie combines her interests of science and human behavior to excel on the basketball court and prepare for the military.
"Psychology complements my biology major by giving me insight into human behavior and health," said Jackie. "It鈥檚 helped me understand injuries better and support my teammates through mental blocks."
Jackie鈥檚 academic background also fuels her military aspirations. 鈥淎s a Marine Officer, I will face extreme challenges and be pushed beyond my limits while making critical decisions,鈥 said Jackie. 鈥淢y science and psychology studies have taught me to embrace challenges and approach uncertainty with curiosity and strategic planning.鈥
A Desire to Serve
Growing up in a Marine family fostered Jackie鈥檚 determination and resilience, inspired by her father and grandfather鈥檚 service.
"The work ethic instilled in me by my family translates directly into basketball, where I stay resilient, disciplined, and committed to putting in extra reps and taking extra shots," she said. "The team-oriented nature of the Marine Corps also aligns with the sense of camaraderie I鈥檝e found on the women鈥檚 basketball team."
She recently completed six weeks of Marine Corps Platoon Leaders Class (PLC) training, preparing her for her goal of becoming a Marine Officer.

"If you take the time to look into it and go to events, you'll find so many people that are like you, and you'll find your friends."
Marist Encourages Balance
For Jackie, juggling academics, athletics, and community involvement takes careful time management, but she鈥檚 grateful that Marist helps make doing more possible.
On campus support: "Thankfully, coaches and professors encourage us to find balance," she said. "The liberal arts courses have also made me more adaptable. For instance, a literature class I took freshman year taught me valuable writing and referencing skills that I now use in my science classes."
Reflecting by the Hudson River: "The beauty of Marist鈥檚 campus also offers me a soothing space to study and unwind," she said. "When I need to focus but also decompress, I love sitting at my favorite spot by the river at a picnic table with a view of the water."
A Strong & Spirited Student Athlete
Beyond basketball and school, Jackie has found community and connections through the Department of Spiritual Life and Service.
Jackie is part of Arise, a nondenominational Christian fellowship that helps her reflect and stay grounded.
Embracing 'AND', Not 'OR': "My Arise friend group reminds me there鈥檚 more to life than just the rush of academics and athletics," she said. "I can be competitive on the court, dive into challenging science courses, and find peace in spiritual life."
Jackie鈥檚 Advice
鈥Take advantage of all the opportunities here,鈥 she said. 鈥淢arist encourages you to explore, to do more, and to find your true self. Whether you鈥檙e interested in sports, academics, arts, or spiritual life, Marist has a community for you.鈥
