Marist Italy Celebrates Class of 2025
May 28, 2025 鈥� Marist Italy proudly hosted the institution鈥檚 first-ever Commencement celebrations under its new name, Marist University. Held a full week before the ceremonies in Poughkeepsie, the University honored 12 graduating students at Palazzo Budini Gattai, a historic venue in the heart of Florence.
The graduates represented four countries across three continents. Among them were nine students from the United States, hailing from seven different states. Collectively, the Marist Italy graduates earned degrees in seven academic disciplines. Some began their journeys as four-year students in Florence, while others arrived as first-year students intending to study in Poughkeepsie but fell in love with Florence and chose to stay.
All graduates completed their studies at Marist鈥檚 Florence campus, in partnership with the Lorenzo de' Medici (LdM) Institute.
President Kevin Weinman addressed the graduates, praising their global perspective and bold, inquisitive spirits. He also acknowledged the faculty, staff, and students of the Institute, celebrating the strong and enduring partnership between LdM and Marist.
鈥淭he world we live in is more diverse and interconnected than ever 鈥� and the issues we鈥檙e facing require cooperation, mutual understanding, and respect,鈥� said President Kevin Weinman. 鈥淔ortunately, you鈥檝e got the skills needed to succeed. You鈥檙e clearly ready to work across cultures and borders.鈥�

鈥淚 am so grateful to have had the opportunity to live and study in Florence for my undergrad because it changed my life,鈥� said Natali Vanbourgondien '25, fashion merchandising major. 鈥淎t LdM/Marist, I took classes like fashion and digital illustration, textile science, and machine knitting. I also found an amazing creative community that shares my values around sustainability, relationships, and creativity.鈥�
鈥淎 standout memory in Florence was having drinks at Serre Torrigiani in Piazzetta, a space designed by my professor, Chiara Fanigliulo,鈥� said Sophia Daigel 鈥�25, an interior design major with a minor in graphic design. 鈥淟earning from accomplished professionals like her made the experience feel deeply connected to the real design world. I鈥檓 excited to begin my career as a Design Assistant at Koo de Kir Architectural Interiors in Boston after graduation.鈥�
Vanessa Nichol-Peters, Director of Marist Italy, addressed the graduates with heartfelt remarks, taking time to acknowledge each student individually.
鈥淎s we sat around the table at our senior dinner last week, what struck me most was how far you鈥檝e all come and how proud we are of your accomplishments and your determination,鈥� she said. 鈥淵ou have enriched our community in Florence in ways you cannot even imagine. We are so privileged to be part of your journey. Congratulations!鈥�
The Marist Italy campus in Florence offers a total of 9 different bachelor鈥檚 degree programs. These programs have become one of the University鈥檚 most distinctive features, attracting students worldwide. While some students choose to earn their full degrees in Florence, others opt for a study abroad experience at the sister campus in Poughkeepsie, or in other locations like Korea, Japan, Paris, and many more destinations which can last a year, a semester, or even a few weeks.
