Sports Communication for Success in the Field

Marist鈥檚 Sports Communication concentration within the Communication major goes beyond scores and statistics. You will read and analyze sports in new ways, critically examining the role of sports in society and considering such areas as gender, race, and public policy in the context of sports. With a unique combination of theory and practice, you鈥檒l have real-world experience in sports communication long before you enter the industry after graduation.

William is a storyteller, mentor, cook, and lifelong learner, driven by curiosity and connection.


Inspired to cover sports and step beyond the broadcast booth, William is a Communication major with a concentration in Sports Communication and a minor in Digital Video Production. His passion for sports began in his childhood with trips to Madison Square Garden, where the announcers shaped his experience. This passion has since evolved into professional-level experiences as an on-air host, producer, and editor for various sports-related content for Marist.

The Center for Sports Communication frequently invites industry leaders to campus for teaching, lectures, and Q&A sessions, providing Sports Communication students with opportunities to learn and engage. Most recently, three-time Emmy winner and the voice of the NBA on ESPN, Mike Breen, shared insights from his career in sports media during a discussion with the students.

Marist's Center for Sports Communication offers students unique opportunities to embark on once-in-a-lifetime trips. Recently, a group of Sports Communication students attended Media Week for Super Bowl LX, where they connected with professionals, conducted interviews, and produced live, multi-platform coverage of the biggest event in sports.

  • ESPN Control Room: produce NCAA Division I basketball and volleyball games for broadcast on ESPN3 and ESPN+.
  • Center for Sports Communication: produce sports podcasts, conduct sports communication research with leading faculty, and engage with industry professionals.

There were many reasons why I chose Marist – the beautiful campus, the people, the culture, the opportunities that came with a school so close to New York City. Before coming to Marist, I had never used a camera, never produced a video, and never edited a video. Marist University's Sports Communication Frequently Asked Questions

Marist's sports communication concentration teaches students how to report on, analyze, produce, and communicate about sports across various platforms. Sports Communication students study topics such as sports reporting, broadcasting, and public relations, along with an introduction to journalism and issues in sports media.
