Joanna D'Avanzo

Senior Professional Lecturer of Advertising
Faculty Coordinator, Marist-LdM Global Marketing Communication

Bio

Joanna D鈥橝vanzo is a Senior Professional Lecturer of Advertising at Marist University, where she teaches courses in advertising, creativity, strategy, and portfolio development. She previously served as Chair of the Communication Department and currently serves as Faculty Coordinator for the Global Marketing Communication program in Florence, working across Marist鈥檚 Poughkeepsie and Florence campuses.

At Marist, Joanna has helped shape the advertising curriculum with an emphasis on creative thinking, strategic problem solving, and connecting classroom learning to professional practice. She founded the Marist Creative Portfolio Review, which brings students and advertising professionals together in New York City, and regularly mentors students through national advertising competitions. Her students have earned recognition from The One Club for Creativity's Young Ones Competition, the American Advertising Federation's National Student Advertising Competition, and the Crowbar Awards, including Silver Pencils, district championships, and Gold and Blue Crowbars.

In 2026, Joanna received Marist University鈥檚 Board of Trustees Distinguished Teaching Award. She was also recognized with the Academic Vibrancy Award for Academic Advising in 2025. Beyond the classroom, she contributes to University initiatives focused on teaching and learning, assessment, faculty engagement, and emerging technologies. She is a contributing faculty member to the Marist AI Academy's AI Literacy Initiative and has presented on topics including digital lab and studio pedagogy, academic advising, assessment, and first-year teaching.

Before entering academia, Joanna spent more than 20 years in the advertising industry, working her way from assistant art director to Vice President/Creative Director at leading New York agencies including McCann, DMB&B, JWT, and Grey. She created campaigns for clients including Burger King, Hasbro, Panasonic, Gatorade, Dove, and Smucker's. That experience continues to shape her teaching and her commitment to giving students practical, hands-on opportunities that connect what they learn in the classroom with the careers they are preparing to enter.

Joanna remains active in the advertising industry and advertising education. She has served as a juror for The One Club for Creativity鈥檚 Young Ones Competition and on its Educators Summit Planning Committee and currently serves as a panelist for the National Advertising Review Board. She also created the Cannes Lions Experience, a global attachment program that brings Marist students to the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, immersing them in one of the world鈥檚 leading creative events while expanding their cultural awareness and creative perspective.

Joanna encourages her students to "know a little about a lot"鈥 a philosophy she tries to live by herself. Her own interests in creativity, design, culture, technology, and AI continually find their way into her teaching. She holds a BFA in Advertising Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology, studied graphic design at the London College of Communication, and has taught in higher education since 2010, including at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

Outside of the classroom, Joanna can usually be found exploring street art in cities around the world, listening to an ever-growing list of podcasts, experimenting with AI, searching for the perfect typeface, or learning from her three Gen Z sons, who help her stay culturally current and humble. True to her own advice to "know a little about a lot," she embraces every opportunity to keep learning and expanding her creative perspective.
