Jeffrey Basinger
Assistant Professor of Communication / Multimedia Storytelling
Bio
Professor Basinger began his storytelling career face-down in frigid waters documenting fish and amphibians, working across the United States for documentary nonprofit Freshwaters Illustrated. With a film and digital media B.A. from University of California, Santa Cruz, and a creative writing M.F.A. from Oregon State University, Basinger quickly moved into the journalism world as a photographer and videographer. He is still friends with many of the fish.
Working with one of the nation鈥檚 largest local media organizations, Newsday on Long Island, Basinger rose to senior multimedia producer, working closely with the nationally recognized investigations team. With the I-Team, and through multimedia storytelling, his work regularly aims to hold the powerful accountable and uncover systemic injustices. His contributions on a 3-year-long undercover investigation of real estate practices garnered a 2019 Peabody Award, among many other accolades.
In his career, Basinger has produced award-winning short news documentaries and explainers about local UFC fighters, professional boxers, ambitious restaurateurs, struggling clammers, COVID-ravaged hospitals, former mafia underbosses, weight-cutting athletes, autistic high schoolers, police misconduct cover-ups, and underground toxic plumes, among other very exciting topics. His work has also been awarded by Polk, Murrow, Scripps Howard, Associated Press, NY Press Club, Headliners, Deadline Club, Silurians, INMA, NYPPA, AP Sports Editors. To date he has 29 regional Emmy awards, many of which are in boxes in his basement.
He is a licensed small UAV pilot and annoys his neighbors with his FPV drone on weekends.
